Missed Rubbish and Recycling collections

by Nigel Bakhai on 30 July, 2012

As many of you will know from personal experience, Elthorne has been beset by problems of missed rubbish and recycling collections since Ealing Council changed contractor at the beginning of April.

The figures I have obtained show that Elthorne has been one of the worst hit parts of the borough. In April, Elthorne ranked as the third worst out of the 23 wards with over 700 missed collections reported locally. At the time, I even went on my bike around the ward, and reported a number of missed collections myself.  Since April, the numbers of missed collections may have dropped off , down to 241 in May and 166 in June, but the council’s performance in Elthorne has still remained comparatively poor and in May we had the highest number of missed collections in the borough. In June Elthorne was second worst, and in the first half of July we had the hghest number of missed collections in Ealing again.

The new contractor, Enterprise, and the Council have both had lots of questions to answer over their readiness at the start of the contract, particularly in relation to the lack of vehicles, the training and transfer of staff. Like many councillors, I have had to deal with numerous complaints from residents about missed collections or the poor service being provided. For example, I have had to explain to angry or disillusioned constituents why they are carefully sorting their recycling materials only for them to be mixed up when they are being collected, or to have to explain to them that their recyclables are not going to landfill but are being sent to a recycling facility in Kent.

The council has now given me their assurance that the new refuse and recycling vehicles will finally be available by the end of July. Nevertheless, I have written to the Director of Environment and Leisure at Ealing Council to complain about the poor performance of Enterprise Ltd over the last few months and with your help I will continue to monitor the council’s performance in Elthorne to make sure that the arrival of these new vehicles leads to service improvements in the area. Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with rubbish or recycling collections in your road.
